Hypoallergenic

Are Bengal Cats Hypoallergenic?

Let us first define what hypoallergenic means.

Hypoallergenic is being less likely to cause an allergic reaction.

NO CAT is completely free from allergens.

It is said that the cat allergies come from a protein called Feld 1. Fel d 1 is carried and transmitted through their urine, saliva, and dander.

We’ll go over why people make such claims.

• Bengal cats have a beautiful fur like pelt that is short and requires very little care.

• They do not groom themselves as much as other breeds.

• They shed very little.

• There are claims that people who have cat allergies are less affected by a Bengal cat.

• Claims have been made that Bengal cats produce less of the Fel d 1 protein compared to other breeds but as far as we know there is no actual evidence to support this claim.

If a cat sheds less and cleans themselves less the claim can be made that the cat in turn spreads less allergy causing proteins throughout their environment. Does that mean that a Bengal cat is less likely to spread around allergens? Arguably the answer is yes. But please beware that just because you may have less of a reaction does not mean that you will have no reaction at all.

It is worth noting that male cats have been proven to produce more Fel d 1 then females.

Bengals DID make the top ten list of most hypoallergenic cats.

In conclusion, if you are in the market for a cat that you might have less of an allergic reaction to then you just might want to consider a Bengal cat and a female.
