Use a clumping litter.
Clean the clumps out daily at least.
Use a litter box large enough for your cat.
Keep the litter deep (about 3 inches).
Have multiple litter boxes in the home.
Place litter boxes in a quiet area.
Use a mat that will be soft on your cats paws.
Use scented litters.
Use deodorizers that contain chemicals.
Use pine pellets.
Use paper pellets.
Punish your cat for accidents outside the box.
Place a child in charge of the litter box.
Use plastic grass mats outside the box.
Listen ya’ll, clean out the litter boxes daily. You would not be expected to use the toilet for a week without being able to flush it so neither should your cat. When your cats litter box fills with waste, they are expected to walk through all of that to use the bathroom. All the poop and pee that they walk through, spreads through your house. Your cat jumps and climbs on everything and what is on their paws goes with them. You should use a clumping litter and clean the litter box out daily to ensure that you are getting every bit of waste.
The litter box should have enough room in it for your cat to be able to move around comfortably. You should keep about 3 inches of litter in the bottom to prevent the urine from reaching the bottom of the litter box. You should have multiple litter boxes throughout the house to make your cat feel more comfortable in using them. Some people recommend that you don’t use a hooded litter box, however this is unavoidable in my house because I have dogs.
I have done some research into, and spoken with veterinarians, about the use of corn litter. Corn poses a greater hyperallergic reaction, therefore the dust in it is worse for your cat than the dust from clay cat litter.
Do not use pelleted litters. The urine from your cat will all flow to the bottom around the pellets and then the pellets will soak up the urine. This will smell awful, and you again will have to wait until the litter box “fills” with waste enough to discard all of the pellets.
I do NOT like crystal (silica gel) litter!!! You will just end up quadrupling your cat litter bill. We know, we’ve tried. I have tried pretty litter. I used it for about 4 months. It didn’t take long to realize that is not a litter I would recommend!!! EVER!!! It had a lower amount of smell the first day or two, however, it is not a clumping litter therefore you have to completely dump and replace about once a week. When you would do this the smell was horrendous. Not to mention that to still use a comfortable amount. I was using an entire large bag every week per box (we have 3). That was a hundred dollars every week.
Please note, I have used a clumping form of a crystal litter, I will not ever recommend this product to any person on this planet!!!
Make sure that you are using litter that is free from harmful added chemicals and perfumes. Your cat has a nose much more sensitive than yours, and they will not enjoy stepping into your explosion of chemicals that is harmful to their respiratory system.
We live on a small farm, and we use this handy white powder for SO MANY THINGS! It helps keep bugs down naturally because they cannot live in it. We put it in our chicken coops, laying boxes, on our horses, cows, goats, and such. It is all natural and non-toxic. We have never had fleas on any of our animals. It is safe to use on your dogs and cats’ fur. It is an amazing absorber and deodorizer. We add a small amount to the litter boxes, and it helps tremendously. You do, however, need to be cautious of how much you are using because it is an ultra-fine powder and can easily be inhaled. This will not hurt your cat but can cause irritation in their respiratory system. Keep it away from your cats face. It will not harm them if it is ingested. We highly recommend the use of diatomaceous earth.
Basically, the idea is to not use litters that you cannot scoop the clumped waste out of daily.
We use and HIGHLY RECOMMNED Frisco Grass Cat Litter! This is hands down the best litter product I have ever had the pleasure of using!!!!
Please note, we start all kittens on Dr. Elsey’s Kitten Attract litter. This litter however is only used as a tool to help the kittens learn to use the litter box. I do not recommend this litter for after you take your kitten home. We will already have transitioned your kitten over to our primary litter. If you think you might want to get some to help your kitten remember where the litter boxes are, I recommend mixing it with the primary litter you will be using by only 1-2. (I am very sensitive to the smell of this litter.)
Your kitten will already be accustomed to using what we have here. People often expect them to walk in and do everything perfect in their new home. You need to remember much like transitioning their food, it will take a little time to transition their new litter. Please be respectful to your kitten and allow them this time. It is recommended that you start with the litter we currently use and slowly adjust to what you want to use. Always give time.
